History of St. Peter's Church
The beginning of St. Peter's Church dates back to 1893 when Joseph Karmann and William Ryan were instrumental in securing lots north of the Stanton City Park , where a church and parsonage were built. It wasn't until 1914 that the church was assigned a resident pastor. One of the first resident pastors was Father A. Jarzemski. The original church building served the community of Stanton, until plans were made to build a new fire-proof brick structure that could accommodate all the parishioners at once. Ground was broke on July 27th, 1967. On a cold day on Jan. 11th, 1968 the cornerstone ceremony was performed by Father Peter Dunne. Medals, a small crucifix, a 50 cent Kennedy coin, a newspaper of the day, pictures of parishioners, and the names of the ladies who were present at an Altar Society meeting that coincided the same day were sealed in the time capsule. The new church building should have been dedicated in 1968, the 75th year of the founding of the parish, but difficulties postponed the ceremony until May of 1970. St. Peter's also now has a spacious parish hall with classrooms that is used for special events throughout the year.
